Kanata lakes is renowned for its vast green spaces, comprising 40% of its land, including a golf course. However, due to declining profits, the golf course operators decided to sell the land to the builder Minto. This decision sparked discontent among local residents, leading to a court case. Ultimately, the golf course won the appeal, allowing the sale to proceed. It's highly likely that in the coming years, residential housing will be developed on this site. Although residents are still contesting this development, the likelihood of their success is low. Minto has announced plans to build 1,480 homes while preserving at least 25% of the green space.

The area and its surroundings boast numerous scenic walking, running, hiking, and biking trails. Beaver Pond, recognized as a provincial conservation wetland, provides a habitat for various protected species and features a beautiful 2-kilometer trail around it. Residents also enjoy outdoor and indoor skating rinks, splash pads, playgrounds, tennis courts, and soccer fields. Additionally, the area is adjacent to the South March Conservation Area, a paradise for mountain bikers and hikers with dozens of trails to choose from. During the winter months, the golf course land also serves as a trail for cross-country skiing and sledding.
